Our enthusiastic, hard-working team delivers to a wide range of customers with shops, markets, food trucks and ship chandleries, who supply provisions for sea-going vessels such as oil tanks and large container ships. All goods are collected and delivered using our own trucks.
‘Daily fast and fresh’ is our motto!
How it all started...
It all began around the turn of the 20th century with a vegetable garden in Pernis—a neighborhood on the south side of Rotterdam, NL—where the Meyboom family began growing food for the community with financial help from the church. As time went on, the harvest began to exceed local needs.
With entrepreneurial blood in the veins, a pushcart was used to sell surplus vegetables door to door. Increasingly, the market expanded: the pushcart was taken per ferry from Pernis to sell in the neighboring city of Schiedam.
Storefront on the Noordplein town square
Now a wholesale supplier, Klaas Meyboom and his four brothers opened a large brick-and-mortar shop for their business, Meyboom Rotterdam, on the city's bustling Noordplein square.
This building housed a banana ripening facility, unique in the Netherlands. Here, Meyboom Rotterdam ripened and resold imported bananas alongside their other fruits and vegetables.
In the 1960s, Meyboom Rotterdam grew to be the world's largest banana ripener, with exports to Germany and England.
De Spaanse Polder
As the 1960s progressed, Rotterdam approved development of a new wholesale retail terrain, currently known as the Spaanse Polder. Meyboom Rotterdam purchased a large building on this terrain, where Klaas Meyboom and his four brothers continued trading.
Meyboom Pernis
In the 1970s, Klaas Meyboom and one of his sons, Leen Meyboom, brought the business back to its roots in Pernis, adopting the name of Meyboom Pernis and devoting themselves to providing grocers with a complete range of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Meyboom Rotterdam continued for a few more years under the leadership of Klaas's brother Leen Meyboom.
Bernisser Wholesale
In 1984, Leen Meyboom moved from Pernis to Abbenbroek, where he continued the business under the name Bernisser Groothandel (Wholesale). A large, new warehouse was built in 1996.
Klaas Meyboom
In September 2008, (grand)son Klaas Meyboom became the new director, taking over from his father, Leen Meyboom.
Second warehouse
In April 2009, a second large warehouse was built behind the existing warehouse. This expanded the work floor from 500 m2 to 1000 m2 and added two large cool cells.
Meyboom B.V.
In March 2013, the company re-adopted its original name: Meyboom B.V., its current form.
